CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING AREAS NEAR LES CARROZ
Cross-country skiing is another winter star. If you’re looking for an alternative to downhill skiing, cross-country skiing is the perfect way to spend a holiday that will delight young and old alike. In skating step or alternating, it’s up to you to choose your style!
Cross-country skiing is an activity made famous with the rise of the biathlon in Alpine sports. What’s the difference with downhill skiing? Even if the equipment requirements seem the same, i.e. a pair of skis and poles, you’ll notice that the skis are lighter, bigger, thinner and without edges. The programme doesn’t include a series of descents; instead, you’ll enjoy taking time to become one with the surrounding nature and manage an effort that’s both gentle and sporty. Don’t panic; your arms and poles are there to help you!
There are two Nordic areas accessible from Les Carroz where you can enjoy this activity with all its benefits: new sensations on the slopes, immersing yourself in mountain landscapes, and not forgetting to keep fit.
1 – The Agy Nordic ski area, 30 km from Les Carroz towards Saint-Sigismond. Located on a plateau at the gateway to the Grand Massif, Agy’s six varied runs offer superb panoramic views over the Arve and Giffre valleys and the surrounding peaks.
You can hire the required cross-country skiing equipment (skis and poles) on-site. There’s also a secure sledge run, 3 pedestrian/snowshoe runs, 1 self-catering room, 1 restaurant and picnic tables to suit the whole family.
If you want to hit the cross-country ski runs, leave your car to rest in Les Carroz. Free shuttle buses provide easy access to this Nordic ski area throughout the winter (details of timetables at the Tourist Office).
2 – The Col de Pierre Carrée site (towards Flaine) open from mid-December to mid-April. Located at an altitude of 1800m, access to the 2.5km run is free for all. So, it’s the perfect way to ski differently! Tip: remember to bring your equipment beforehand, as this Nordic ski area does not have an on-site equipment rental shop.
IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF FRENCH CHAMPIONS…
Another ideal winter pastime for the whole family, Nordic skiing is becoming increasingly popular with those looking for new experiences on the slopes. Popular in northern countries and in Europe, discover this activity in Haute-Savoie, on the cross-country ski runs of Les Carroz.
There are two styles of Nordic skiing. The “classic” or “alternative” approach is a good option for a first experience of cross-country skiing. The “skating” or “skater step” style, practised by the famous Martin Fourcade, is more technical but offers superb gliding sensations.
